It's no surprise that the SBP team adores a festive Cinco de Mayo — our award-winning blog is called Tacos & Tequila after all, folks! As LA's (self-appointed) tacos and tequila task force, we've scouted the city to bring you our 2025 guide to celebrating well.
From delicious hidden gems to some upscale spots where the guacamole may cost more than a square foot in Brentwood (jk…kind of), we've got the inside track on where to raise your glass this Cinco de Mayo. Consider this your invitation to join the SBP team in our annual pilgrimage to salted rims and lime wedges.
Want to celebrate at home? We’ve included some delicioso recipes to bring the fiesta to you.
Tu Madré | Brentwood
A new SBP favorite, Tu Madré has quickly won our hearts with its modern take on traditional Mexican cuisine. The colorful, energetic space provides the perfect backdrop for their creative taco offerings and hand-crafted cocktails. Don't miss the crispy fish tacos paired with their signature margarita flight for a refreshing Cinco celebration. Plus, they’ll have lots of fun specials, music, and dancing to celebrate the holiday.

Atla | Venice
While its upscale sister restaurants Damian and Pujol garner a great deal of attention, Atla offers a more understated yet incredibly satisfying take on Mexican cuisine in a minimalist-chic setting on Abbot Kinney. Plus, for a limited time (May 2-3), they're hosting a special takeover by Animalón — the Michelin-starred restaurant from Valle de Guadalupe in Baja founded by acclaimed Chef Javier Plascencia. This rare meeting of culinary minds promises an exceptional experience that showcases the best of Mexican coastal cuisine.
Damian | DTLA
Can’t jet down to Pujol in Mexico City for Cinco de Mayo? We’ve got the next best thing. From celebrated chef Enrique Olvera, Damian in the Arts District offers a refined menu featuring coastal Mexican flavors with California influences. The tostadas are works of art, and their curated selection of mezcal and tequila will impress even the most discerning connoisseurs (aka F. Ron and David). They book up early, but bar and communal seating are first come, first serve.
Casablanca | Venice
You can’t spell Cinco de Mayo without Casablanca. Step into this Venice institution and you'll be instantly transported to a lively Mexican hacienda. Casablanca has been serving up favorites like their “almost famous” burritos and tacos for over 40 years. With live music, tortillas made tableside, and a roving margarita cart, this vibrant atmosphere is ready-made for any celebration. FUN FACT: SBP founders F. Ron & David filmed an epic interview with owner Robert Lopez, cementing this spot in SBP lore.
Butterfly | Culver City
A relative newcomer to the scene from the award-winning José Andrés Group, Butterfly has quickly established itself as a must-visit destination in Culver City. The vibrant, Instagram-worthy décor sets the stage for their imaginative menu featuring regional Mexican specialties with contemporary twists. Their cocktails are both visually stunning and deliciously crafted (PSA: Observer just voted their Salt Air Marg as one of the best in town), while the lively atmosphere makes this an ideal spot to gather with friends for a festive Cinco.
Javier’s | Century City
For a splashier Cinco de Mayo experience, head to Javier's in Century City. This sophisticated cantina delivers elevated Mexican cuisine in a stunning setting that blends traditional elements with modern luxury. The menu features premium ingredients in classic preparations, from lobster enchiladas to prime steak fajitas, while their extensive tequila collection is showcased in creative cocktails that go well beyond the basic margarita.
Loreto | Frogtown
This hidden gem in Frogtown has been generating serious buzz for its authentic Baja-inspired cuisine. Behind its intimate, casual façade lies a kitchen producing truly exceptional food. Handmade blue corn tortillas serve as the perfect foundation for expertly prepared fillings—ranging from succulent carnitas to delicate grilled fish. Complete your experience with one of their carefully curated small-batch mezcal selections. With its cozy patio setting, Loreto offers the ideal backdrop for a laid-back Cinco celebration.

Dama | DTLA
Step into the tropical-inspired dining room at Dama and you'll immediately feel transported to Old Havana. While not strictly Mexican, this Latin American gem in the Fashion District offers a pan-Latin menu that shines with Mexican influences. The grand, palm-filled space sets a glamorous backdrop for their impeccable cocktail menu featuring rare rums and artisanal tequilas. For Cinco de Mayo weekend (May 2-5), they're offering special menu items including a sweet and spicy Scallop Aguachile, plus Rock Shrimp tossed in chipotle mayo and finished with pickled jalapeños and cilantro. *Recipe adapted from Isabel Eats
