Netflix is a joke. No, seriously — they’re hosting a live comedy festival named just that. From April 28 to May 8, Angelenos can attend epic shows with legendary comics like Dave Chappelle, Amy Schumer, and Pete Davidson taking the stage. The 11-day fest features almost 300 events across the city at locations ranging from Dodger Stadium, the Forum, Crypto.com Arena, and the Hollywood Bowl to major theaters and comedy venues. But since not all of us can make it this year, we’ve compiled a list of our favorite and funniest comedy specials that you can stream whenever and wherever on Netflix. So whether it’s in person or from the comfort of your home, expect lots of laughs and plenty of irreverent moments that have SBP written all over them.
F. Ron Smith | Aziz Ansari, Nightclub Comedian
There are so many great comedy specials on Netflix. One of my recent favorites is Aziz Ansari’s Nightclub Comedian — it’s a gleeful reprieve from the heaviness of today’s cultural events.
David Berg | Jerry Seinfeld, Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee
My favorite isn’t a comedy special per se, but many of the comedians who will be at the festival have been on it. It’s Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee hosted by Jerry Seinfeld. It cracks me up every time and I love hearing the behind-the-scenes info.
Robert Morton | Dave Chappelle, The Closer
There are so many great comedy specials on Netflix. One of my recent favorites is Aziz Ansari’s Nightclub Comedian — it’s a gleeful reprieve from the heaviness of today’s cultural events.
Oliver Maniquis | Jo Koy, Comin’ in Hot
It’s Jo Koy for me. I’ve seen him live two times in the past two years. He’s amazing, super funny, and really knows the culture he represents Filipinos. His sold-out shows are packed and his upcoming big-screen movie and tv shows are due to his success with his Netflix specials.
Nathan Stadler | Nate Bargatze, The Tennessee Kid
Why do I love this special? Because the guys named Nate, Nathan and Nathaniel need to stick together.
Bobby Neely | Chappelle’s Home Team, Earthquake: Legendary
Earthquake (as Dave Chapelle explains when he presents him) is a force of nature…hence the name. Warning: once he starts, you have to keep up because he goes and doesn’t wait for you. There is a moment in the special where I found myself laughing for five straight minutes. Also, being from Atlanta, I remember growing up in the 90s and going to a comedy club that he owned.
Sewit Eshetu | Hasan Minhaj, Homecoming King
I love hearing personal and family stories mixed into comedy. It’s relatable and hysterical — I highly recommend it!
Courtney Welsh | Ali Wong, Baby Cobra
This Ali Wong comedy special will have you laughing so hard you cry. She talks about everything from hoarding to her super rocky road to pregnancy, making it both relatable and hilarious.
Ryan Bergum & Andra Nechita | Kevin Hart, What Now?
We both agree that anything with Kevin Hart has us LOL-ing.
Katy Yambao | Marc Maron, End Times Fun
I love Marc’s observational and, at times, philosophical approach to comedy. Highly recommend it!
Brandon Smith | Dave Chappelle, Equanimity & the Bird Revelation
What can I say — it’s a classic and there’s a reason why those are the best.
Krista Masella | Tiffany Haddish, They Ready
Rising stars take the stage! I love watching up-and-coming comedians because their sets always feel fresher and less polished, which I enjoy. This special by Tiffany Haddish didn’t disappoint. Laughs for days!
Trevor Edmond | John Mulaney, Kid Gorgeous at Radio City
There are so many great comedy specials on Netflix. Beyond John Mulaney’s Kid Gorgeous at Radio City, I love Mike Birbiglia’s My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend and Patton Oswalt’s Annihilation. You cannot go wrong with any of them.
