We have a lot to be grateful for this year. Our family, our friends, our clients — and, above all, the incredible city we collectively call home. With Thanksgiving in the books and ‘Giving Tuesday’ just days away, our team is making sure to prioritize giving back amidst the holiday craze. And while there are countless routes you could take, oftentimes the simplest acts make the biggest impact. In this edition of SBP’s Gratitude Guide, here are five simple ways to give back to those in need this holiday season in LA.
1. Volunteer at the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank
The LA Regional Food Bank relies on extra volunteers this time of year to sort and package donations for their partner agencies. Shifts are available Monday through Saturday at the Food Bank's facility near downtown LA. Commit to just two to three hours and you can help them distribute enough food for thousands of meals to hungry LA residents!
2. Deliver Food with Meals on Wheels West
Make the holidays brighter for homebound seniors and disabled individuals by delivering meals right in your neighborhood with Meals on Wheels West. Their routes take just 1-2 hours to complete. Meals on Wheels West serves several LA communities including Santa Monica, Venice, Pacific Palisades and more. Volunteering is a great way to bring holiday cheer and vital nourishment to vulnerable Angelenos spending the season alone at home.
3. Donate Toys to Spark of Love Toy Drive
Each year, the LA Fire Department collects new, unwrapped toys through their Spark of Love Toy Drive to distribute to children less fortunate during the holidays. While you’re shopping, simply grab a few toys for toddlers and teens — from action figures to dolls, games and sporting goods — then drop off your donation at any local LA fire station. Your gift can help spread joy to thousands of children in need right here in our city this holiday season.
4. Thank an LA Public Service Worker
Police officers, firefighters, hospital staff and other public service workers tirelessly serve LA communities every single day, including throughout the holidays. This season, take a moment to thank these dedicated heroes who sacrifice so much for our city. Whether you surprise them with a yummy meal (use our Recipe Book for inspo!), flowers, gift cards or a simple "thank you" to show appreciation for their hard work, a small act of gratitude can uplift their spirits during their busiest time of year.
5. Give Back to a Cause You Care About
Explore different ways to support a cause you believe in. Clean out your closet and donate gently used clothes, contribute canned goods to a local food drive, extend your compassion to animals through goods and donations. All you have to do is choose a cause close to your heart and make a positive impact through simple acts of generosity!
