LA may have its share of traffic, but seasoned hikers know it’s also home to some of the absolute best hiking trails around. Stunning, majestic mountains literally hug the city, putting you at any trailhead in almost 20 minutes — no matter your whereabouts. Whether you're chasing skyline views, some peace and tranquility, or upping your fitness game, these SBP-approved trails await your exploration.

Kenneth Hahn State Recreation Area: LA's Best-Kept Secret

If you haven’t been to Kenneth Hahn, you’re missing out. Hidden in Baldwin Hills, this 401‑acre park might just be LA’s Central Park — complete with koi ponds, a waterfall, and enough trail variety for both chill strolls and real-deal climbs. The ridge trail dishes up unbeatable views of Downtown, the Hollywood Hills, and even the Santa Monica Mountains on clear days. Need more incentive? Parking’s free on weekdays, dogs are welcome, and somehow it never feels crowded.

Where: 4100 S. La Cienega Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90056

Mandeville/Westridge Fire Road: The Brentwood Local's Go-To

Brentwood folks [should] know this one well. Starting at the end of Westridge Road, this wide-open trail winds through Westridge‑Canyonback Wilderness Park — and it’s as peaceful as it gets. No cramped single-file hiking here; you’ve got space to stretch, take your time, and soak up those canyon views. Push all the way to San Vicente Mountain for a 360° look at LA, the Pacific, and the Valley. FUN FACT: the summit used to be a Cold War-era missile defense site.

Where: W Mandeville Fire Rd, Los Angeles, CA 9004

Sullivan Canyon: A Hidden Green Escape

If you prefer shade and greenery over steep climbs, Sullivan Canyon’s your spot. Nestled between Brentwood and Pacific Palisades, this peaceful trail winds through a quiet oak‑lined canyon that feels miles away from city life. It’s wide, mostly flat, and perfect for an easy weekend walk or a mountain bike ride. The best part? You’ll get cool, forest-y vibes right in the middle of West LA. Dogs are welcome, parking’s free near the intersection of Queensferry Road and Bayliss Road, and springtime brings wildflowers galore.

Where: 2118-2100, Queensferry Rd, Los Angeles, CA 90049

Griffith Park: The Classic That Never Gets Old

With over 4,300 acres and 53 miles of trails, there’s always something new to explore at LA's iconic Griffith Park, no matter how many times you visit. Head up Mount Hollywood for citywide views that stretch from Downtown to the ocean — especially magical at golden hour. Keep an eye out for celebs, bring plenty of water (shade is rare!), and don’t skip the Observatory. It’s free, it’s cinematic, and it’s pure LA.

Where: 2715 N Vermont Canyon Rd, Los Angeles, CA 90027

Los Leones Trail: Ocean Views That’ll Make You Gasp

If you haven’t hiked Los Leones yet, make it your next weekend plan. The trailhead, which reopened in January, sits just a mile from the Pacific Palisades coast and offers lush canyon scenery before opening up to jaw-dropping ocean views. Head up to Parker Mesa Overlook for a sweeping look at the Santa Monica Bay — easily one of the best views in the city. Street parking’s free, restrooms nearby, but no dogs allowed here.

Where: 510 Los Liones Dr, Pacific Palisades, CA 90272
