Your Weekend Just Got Spookier: SBP’s Fave Frights Are Here

Tacos & Tequila

11/1/25

Halloween might be in the books for 2025, but we’re not ready to turn the lights back on just yet. The SBP team rounded up our favorite cinematic frights — the ones that made us scream, squirm, or, yes, hide behind a pillow. So find a big screen, turn up the surround sound, pull down the blinds and press play — the ultimate test of courage, all from the comfort of home. Here’s what’s been keeping us up at night...

28 Years Later

The long-awaited sequel brings the 28 universe full circle, proving that great horror only gets better (and bolder) with time.

    F. Ron Smith: “The perfect bookend. Ralph Fiennes doing his best Apocalypse Now homage? Chills.”

The Shining

From the endless hallways of the Overlook Hotel to Jack Nicholson’s unhinged performance, The Shining proves that psychological terror never goes out of style.

David Berg: “All work and no play still gives me chills.”

Halloween (1 & 2)

Between the chilling score, small-town suspense, and that iconic mask, Halloween remains the gold standard of slasher films — and clearly, an SBP favorite.

Natalie Gurevitch: “My favorite genre! You just can’t beat the classics — Mikey Meyers forever.”

Brandon Smith: “Carpenter’s masterpiece. Simple, suspenseful, and still unbeatable.”

Barbarian

A modern horror standout, Barbarian is a masterclass in tension — sharp, surprising, and just the right amount of twisted.

Courtney Welsh: “A tight, beautifully executed thriller with just the right dose of humor.”

Courtney’s runner-up? Paranormal Activity. “I almost walked out of the theater, I was so scared — Andre had to convince me to stay.”

Hereditary

A modern classic that redefined the genre, Hereditary blends slow-burn dread with shocking family drama — and one unforgettable dinner scene.

Garrett Sanders: “Toni Collette deserved an Oscar. I will die on this hill.”

Coco

Proof that not every Halloween movie needs to be horror, Coco celebrates the beauty of family, memory, and the spirit world — no jump scares required.

Nathan Stadler: “I hate scary movies. This is as close as I get.”

Scream (1 & 2)

The ultimate meta-horror, Scream blends slasher thrills with sharp satire — still clever, still scary, and still endlessly re-watchable.

Sewit Eshetu: “Iconic, clever, and just scary enough to keep me on Nate’s side of the spectrum.”

28 Days Later

Raw, haunting, and unrelenting, 28 Days Later redefined zombie horror for a new generation — a reminder that the scariest monsters are often human.

Krista Masella: “Still the best in the franchise — and genuinely terrifying on first watch.”

Get Out

Smart, stylish, and deeply unsettling, Get Out blurs the line between social commentary and psychological horror — a modern masterpiece that lingers long after the credits roll.

Robert Morton: “Jordan Peele at his best — social commentary and psychological horror that sticks with you.”
