Once you’ve chosen your design firm, get planning pronto. Step one is working with the architect on schematic designs, which usually involve rough layouts and exterior elevation options. This process can take weeks or even months, but (per usual) the SBP team is here to help. When it comes to finding the right contractor, pretend like you’re building a dodgeball team. If the goin’ gets tough, who do you want on your side? Contractors will take a look at your schematic designs and give an estimate, so figure out your budget and compile top-tier candidates. Once you’ve made your pick, consider reaching out to references, visiting job sites or doing some extra research before sealing the deal.
Getting permission is never fun, but getting permits is pretty darn key. Depending on the size of your project and where it’s located, permitting can take a day, months or even years. Do your research before filing anything so you know approximately how long the building process should take. Then prepare to whip out your wallet. Fees can range from a few hundred to thousands of bucks.

Once your plans have been submitted for permits and you’ve selected all of your materials, the contractor will create a contract for construction (try to say that five times fast).
