When it comes to building from the ground up, SBP knows best. But before you literally start digging in, it’s crucial to check off all the right boxes. Don’t know what boxes to check? We’ve concocted a simple solution for you known as PPE. Say it with us—plan, prepare, execute. Below, find SBP’s infallible how-to for building from square one.

Find your match.

We’re pretty sure you can’t build from the ground up on your own. And if you can? Holler at us because we’re lookin’ for a guy. But most people will need to hire an architect and interior designer to formulate a plan and detailed scope of work. Not sure how to find your match? We just so happen to have a full list of surefire architects to bring your dream home to life. Make your pick and get started.

Get planning.

Once you’ve chosen your design firm, get planning pronto. Step one is working with the architect on schematic designs, which usually involve rough layouts and exterior elevation options. This process can take weeks or even months, but (per usual) the SBP team is here to help. Our team is remarkably apt in creating functional, comfortable floor plans that will totally up your resale value. And if you need help selecting top-notch materials? We’ve got you covered. Give us a taste of your style and we’ll point you in the right direction. Just call us your ground up gurus.

Be picky.

When it comes to finding the right contractor, pretend like you’re building a dodgeball team. If the goin’ gets tough, who do you want on your side? Contractors will take a look at your schematic designs and give an estimate, so figure out your budget and compile top-tier candidates. Once you’ve made your pick, consider reaching out to references, visiting job sites or doing some extra research before sealing the deal.

Get permission.

Getting permission is never fun, but getting permits is pretty darn key. Depending on the size of your project and where it’s located, permitting can take a day, months or even years. Do your research before filing anything so you know approximately how long the building process should take. Then prepare to whip out your wallet. Fees can range from a few hundred to thousands of bucks.

Jump on it.

You’re here. You’ve made it. Once your plans have been submitted for permits and you’ve selected all of your materials, the contractor will create a contract for construction (try to say that five times fast). Work with them to get items ahead of time (like cabinets, windows, etc) and consider opting for others if any are on hold for a while. This planning process may seem time-consuming, but you’ll undoubtedly save yourself from disaster along the way. Put in the work upfront, get everyone on the same page then BAM! Smooth sailing.
